Car sharing breaks toll attribution in a specific way: the rentals are short, the handovers are close together, and the same car is often listed on more than one platform. A crossing an hour after a return belongs to the next driver, and getting that wrong costs the trust of both.
Where the minutes matter
On a weekly rental, an hour of error in the handover time changes nothing. On a fleet with two or three rentals a day per car, an hour is the difference between two people — and the one who did not drive through the toll is the one who will dispute it, correctly.
Attribution therefore runs on the actual start and end of each rental rather than on the calendar day, and a crossing that falls in a gap between rentals is flagged rather than assigned to whichever rental happens to be nearest.
One car, several platforms
A car listed on two or three platforms produces bookings from all of them, and a toll has to land on the booking that was actually running — not on the platform whose data arrived first. Each booking is tracked with the platform it came from, and the crossing is matched on time and vehicle rather than on source.
- Overlapping bookings on one car are flagged: on a correctly run fleet they should not exist.
- A crossing during an overlap is attributed to the rental that started later.
- Cancelled and shortened rentals release the tolls that fall outside their window.
Collecting from someone who rented for three hours
The charge is small, the driver is gone, and chasing it by hand costs more than the toll is worth.
