Managing toll transponders across a fleet
The transponder is the cheapest part of tolling and the cause of its most expensive errors. A tag in the wrong car bills the wrong rental; a car with no working tag turns every crossing into a plate read with a fee on top.
The map that goes stale
Every fleet keeps a list of which tag is in which car, and it is correct on the day it is made. Then a tag is moved to cover a car going out on a long rental, a windscreen is replaced, a car is sold with the tag still in it — and the statement starts describing a vehicle that is no longer the one that crossed.
The consequence is quiet. Crossings attributed to the wrong car are attributed to the wrong rental, and the renter who disputes the charge is right.
Accounts multiply too
A fleet crossing state lines accumulates accounts — a new operator here, an inherited account there — and a car can end up tagged on more than one. Both accounts then charge the same crossing, and both charges are real money leaving the business.
- Keep one inventory of tags per car, with the date each was fitted and removed.
- Pull transactions from every account, including the ones that look dormant.
- Treat the same crossing on two accounts as a double debit to recover, not a duplicate to discard.
- Watch for cars generating plate reads: a tag that has stopped working announces itself as a fee, not as an error message.
